I think it's a metaphor. That becoming blinded to the truths around you by believing the lies of others and accepting heavy burdens that aren't yours traps you in a fragile mindset. One that can explode horribly.
But that destruction is secretly a good thing, destroying the false hopes and the lies you've allowed yourself to believe because it's easier to believe whatever you're told than actually commit to the hard and difficult work of seeing the truth of things.
John basically got roped into a conspiracy theory cult and he'd rather accept what they say cause it's more convenient than doing the hard work of opening his eyes to the truth.
Looks like once you're in too deep, there's no way out. I bet he could still obtain redemption if he just asked the right person for it, but that the thought to will never cross his mind, trusting his ideology over anything else.
